Arriving at the bustling port of Callao, a gateway to the sprawling and enchanting city of Lima, can feel a bit daunting. But as we, Chris and Michael, have learned from our own travels on the residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey, a short time in this incredible city is all you need to fall in love with its vibrant culture and rich history.
Lima is the only South American capital located on the Pacific coast, and as a result, it's a city of delightful contradictions. It's an ancient metropolis with a pre-Columbian past that also happens to be a modern culinary and cultural powerhouse. Instead of trying to see it all, a short visit from the port allows you to dive into its most celebrated neighborhoods and experience the unique joy of discovery.
Our DC Hidden Gems YouTube channel shares a closer look at our unforgettable trip to Lima. We recommend checking out the video to get a real feel for the city's vibe.
Navigating from the port of Callao to Lima's main tourist districts like Miraflores and Barranco is straightforward. While some cruise lines offer shuttles, taxis and rideshare apps like Uber are also a reliable option. The trip can take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour or more depending on Lima’s famous traffic, so plan accordingly. Always agree on the fare beforehand if you’re using a traditional taxi.
For a short stay, focusing on the neighboring districts of Miraflores and Barranco is the perfect strategy. They offer a mix of historical sites, scenic beauty, and artistic flair that capture the spirit of modern Lima.
Miraflores: Parks, Pyramids, and Pacific Views
Miraflores is the perfect base for exploring. Its highlight is the Malecón, a stunning clifftop boardwalk that runs along the Pacific Ocean. Here, you'll find locals paragliding, couples strolling, and visitors taking in the breathtaking ocean views.
You can also find the Parque del Amor (Park of Love), a beautiful green space with a statue of a kissing couple, and the iconic Marine Lighthouse, which stands guard over the coast. For a truly unexpected joy, visit the Huaca Pucllana, an ancient pre-Incan adobe pyramid right in the heart of the city. Seeing a thousand-year-old ruin surrounded by modern skyscrapers is a fascinating contrast that proves Lima's deep historical roots.
Don't forget to visit Kennedy Park, known for the dozens of friendly cats that have made it their home. The locals lovingly care for them, and it's a delightful stop for any cat lover.
Just a short walk or taxi ride from Miraflores is Barranco, Lima's bohemian district. This neighborhood is known for its colorful street art, vibrant nightlife, and relaxed, artistic vibe. It’s the perfect place to wander without a plan, discovering hidden art galleries, boutique shops, and charming cafes.
A highlight is the famous Bridge of Sighs. Legend says if you can cross the bridge while holding your breath, your wish will come true. We had a great time attempting this on our trip!
A Taste of Lima: Culinary Delights
No trip to Lima is complete without experiencing its world-renowned food scene. Peru is a culinary capital, and Lima is at its heart. For a brief stay, you can easily sample some of the most famous dishes.
