Live a Life at Sea? We Wrote the Book. Our definitive guide shows you how. All the ins and outs of residential cruising in one place. |
By Chris and Michael from ChartingOurCourse.com
Imagine trading your house for a cruise ship cabin, your neighborhood for the open ocean. That’s precisely what we, Chris and Michael, did when we embarked on our journey aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey, a residential cruise ship. We had our expectations, but nothing truly prepares you for the profound and often unexpected life lessons that come with embracing a full-time life at sea. From embracing minimalism to strengthening our relationship and learning the true value of time, here's how living on a cruise ship has changed us.
When you decide to live on a cruise ship, you quickly realize you can’t bring everything with you. It’s not like moving into a new house where you can simply put things into boxes in the garage. No, you have to get rid of a lot, and it's not always easy. However, what started as a practical necessity—because every item has to earn its spot in a premium space—turned into a revelation for us.
We’ve genuinely enjoyed this notion of minimalism. For years, we had homes with basements and garages, and we filled every inch. Even after downsizing significantly before our retirement, this move to the ship was a major downsize, and we're surprised by how little we miss. It's not just about physical space; it creates mental space too. When you’re not constantly surrounded by "stuff"—buying it, cleaning it, organizing it—you have more opportunities to pull back, settle, and be more present in whatever you're doing. This uncluttered mindset allows us to truly enjoy a sunset, a new destination, or simply being together in our cabin.

Living in such close quarters for extended periods is a unique test for any relationship. We've been together for 22 years, always cherishing our strong bond, but our previous homes always offered separate spaces. Here, that dynamic is different; we have two desks in the same room and a small balcony. Yet, we truly believe this experience has made us even closer [08:14].
Beyond our own relationship, we've had the incredible opportunity to bond with fellow residents on the ship, finding our "tribe" within this vibrant community. We share a passion for travel, problem-solve together through unexpected itinerary changes, and simply enjoy shared fun. Being away from close friends and family on land reinforces the importance of these new connections and the support we provide each other. While we spend a lot of time together, we've also learned to carve out individual time for activities like early morning solitary breakfasts or personal workouts, ensuring a healthy balance [11:33].

Life on a residential cruise ship, especially a startup like the Villa Vie Odyssey, isn't always smooth sailing. We've had to learn a lot about patience. Whether it's itinerary changes, unexpected delays in port due to local immigration, or technical issues with onboard amenities like the pool, things rarely go exactly as planned [15:55]. As Chris wisely points out, if you stay stressed all the time, you'll be stressed all the time!
Beyond patience, flexibility is paramount. We've learned to "roll with it" and adapt to changes, often finding that unexpected shifts can lead to wonderful experiences. A prime example was a series of canceled tender ports off the coast of Brazil that led us directly to Rio de Janeiro for Carnival for several days—a truly unforgettable experience [20:02]. As Michael often says, it’s about "making lemonade out of lemons." This adaptability is not just a useful skill for life at sea; it's a valuable lesson for navigating the ups and downs of everyday life.
As we get older, the fleeting nature of time becomes increasingly apparent. Living this lifestyle has amplified our gratitude and intentionality regarding how we spend our precious moments. We consciously choose experiences that bring us joy and value, rather than letting life just happen to us [22:03]. We've also learned the importance of cutting out unnecessary "noise," such as constant news cycles, to focus on what truly matters [24:38].
Our journey on the Villa Vie Odyssey also provides a front-row seat to the breathtaking beauty of the world. From the stunning, snow-capped mountains of Ushuaia, "the edge of the world," to the vibrant coast of Brazil, and unforgettable wildlife encounters like playful dolphins and orca whales, we're constantly immersed in natural wonders [26:03]. Many of these experiences are unplanned, making them even more special. This constant exposure to new destinations, diverse cultures, and incredible nature fosters a profound appreciation for the planet.
